Many property owners erect chain link gates to surround their land, often on more industrial sites. Chain link gates provide a cheap, secure alternative to common designs, and consequently, require special considerations. Here are some tips for installing a Ghost Controls® automatic gate openers on chain link gates.
Regarding the overall structure of the gate, you may need to may marginal accommodations in order to make it suitable for a Ghost Controls® installation. If your chain link gate does not have a center horizontal bar to mount the gate to, some structure may need to be added. The horizontal bar on many different types of gates helps to secure the gate opener arm to the center of the structure's mass, which gives it better support and makes it easier for the system to operate without strain.
The build of normal chain link gates is designed specifically to be light and cost-efficient, meaning any automatic gate opener will be up to the task of moving it consistently. At Ghost Controls®, we offer a line of gate opener kits manufactured to suit lighter frames, like the ones on farm-style tube gates.
The T-Series of Ghost Controls® automatic gate openers work well with tube gates, and are the perfect kits for chain link gates. As long as your gate does not exceed the graduated requirements of either 900 pounds in weight or 20 feet in length, the TSS1 or TDS2 kit will be perfect for a chain link structure.
The gate opener arm can be through-bolted to a center bar, but this method will often cause unnecessary damage to your electric driveway gate. If you would like to avoid this process, each T-Series kit comes equipped with a single or double set of tube gate brackets to help secure the arm. These tube brackets will securely clamp around a tubular bar to provide support and leverage for gate operation, without the need for any invasive work on the gate's frame.

Any chain link gate that our customers install automatic single or dual gate openers on must be in adequate condition before installation takes place. A driveway single swing gate or double swing gate needs to swing freely in both the open and closed positions to avoid contact with any surfaces such as the ground. Additionally, make sure that your chain link gate is as level and plumb as possible to enable the smoothest installation and operation.
The typical chain link gate hinge over time will wear and need to be replaced due to its simple metal-on-metal design. A hinge upgrade may be a reasonable consideration at this time. Ghost Controls® does not sell any kind of gate hinge upgrades, so a hinge replacement should be at the customer's own discretion.
Regarding the gate's posts, a minimum of 4 inches wide should be observed for steel square posts. If the gate posts are round, the minimum width should be 3 inches. For round posts, round bracket adapters will be needed for installation. Ghost Controls® manufactures a line of 3 and 4 inch round bracket adapters to make your installation quick and easy.
