Solar Automatic Gate Opener Systems

Installing a GHOST CONTROLS® automatic gate opener system that uses solar panels to recharge the batteries instead of the included transformer connected to AC power is very easy.

A large number of our customers prefer a solar powered gate opener systems because

  • Utilizing Solar Power is an environmentally responsible choice by the owner to remain off the “grid” of your local power company.
  • Some installations are unable to reach an AC power point within 1000 feet of the gate opener installation.
  • Some customers do not wish to incur the expense, time, and labor necessary to trench over long distances (up to 1,000 feet) and bury the low voltage wire inside of PVC conduit from  your AC transformer to gate operator control box.
  • Solar power adds flexibility to install a gate opener system in almost any location in the world, regardless of the type of AC power or infrastructure available.

  • Your gate installation may utilize up to three 10 Watt GHOST CONTROLS solar panels connected in parallel or one 30 Watt panel to maximize your charging potential.
  • For solar installations, we suggest purchasing a deep cycle marine/trolling motor battery and battery box at your local retailer.

For solar installations, GHOST CONTROLS® recommends installing only our AXDP 10W solar panel or AX30 30W to maintain optimal performance for your gate opener system. Although, one 10W solar panel is sufficient in many environments, you can add multiple solar panels in parallel (up to three 10W panels) or use one AX30 30W Solar Panel to maximize your recharging potential especially in areas where sunlight can be limited during certain seasons.

GHOST CONTROLS® Solar Panels Are Superior Because:

  • Monocrystalline solar panels, like those offered by GHOST CONTROLS® have a higher efficiency rating than polyscrystalliine cells.
  • Monocrystalline solar panels last longer because they degrade slower over time than polycrystalline solar cells.
  • Polycrystalline-based solar panels, like those sold by some competitors, have a lower efficiency rating, and reduced charging performance over time.
  • Our panels are manufactured to the specification of 80% of peak power output potential over 10 years.

Tips for Solar Installations:
  • Solar panels should be mounted so that foliage growth such as tree leaves, tree branches, or weeds do not cover the solar panel in a shadow at any point during the day.
  • Solar panels should be cleaned periodically to remove any snow, dirt, grime, mold, or mildew that accumulates and deteriorates the performance of the panel.
  • Watch the power LED indicator on the GHOST CONTROLS® system controller to help align the panel properly for maximum charging potential.
  • Solar panels should be pointed true South when located in the Northern Hemisphere to maximize sunlight.
  • A 12V deep cycle marine/trolling motor battery purchased at your local retailer is the best solution for solar applications.
  • Several cloudy/rainy/snowy days in a row may cause the batteries to be depleted if you continue to operate at the same rate.  You may need to top off the batteries on an automatic car charger to keep your system operating correctly.
